In light of the speculation surrounding the upcoming Leica press event in Berlin - expectation is high for an M10 announcement - a few of us here in dpreview's Seattle office took the opportunity to shoot briefly with the Leica M9-P and a selection of current M lenses.
In this article we'll share our experiences using the Leica rangefinder system, not in the context of our normal studio tests and analyses, but out in the real world as a photographic tool. As anyone who's ever shot with a Leica M - or any rangefinder camera for that matter - can tell you, doing so is a vastly different photographic experience than shooting with an SLR.
Setting manual focus via a 'focussing rectangle' located in the center of the optical viewfinder means that you'll often be using a focus-recompose technique or relying on zone focusing with the lens stopped down to a relatively narrow aperture. And unlike the 'tunnel-vision' of an SLR, a rangefinder lets you look beyond the scene, with framelines superimposed in the viewfinder.
Seen through the viewfinder, the outer framelines shown here represent a 35mm field of view. These are paired with mm field of view framelines visible towards the center of the image.
With a rangefinder you turn the focus ring of the lens until objects in the the center 'focussing rectangle' shown here in white appear in perfect alignment in the viewfinder. Experienced rangefinder shooters can work surprisingly quickly even without all of the electronic focusing aids and multiple metering modes that come standard on other modern cameras.
Seeing beyond the edges of the 'frame' allows you to anticipate action and for many, triggers a much more critical sense of composition, in which more options are likely to be considered before releasing the shutter.
The M9-P is a subtle revision of the Leica M9which is itself the second generation of Leica digital rangefinders. Both cameras are identical in operation, image quality and in nearly all other technical specifications. The only significant hardware difference is an updated scratch-resistant rear LCD on the M9-P with an anti-reflective coating to reduce glare. The design and form factor of the M9-P hews closely to the template Leica has embraced since the start of the M series back in The M9 and M9-P are Leica's first full frame digital rangefinders.
Leica M Typ 240 vs M9
In theory, the omission of an image-softening AA filter should translate into greater detail resolution. Of course, a big draw of any Leica rangefinder is its compatibility with the highly regarded and very expensive collection of Leica M-mount lenses.
The M9-P features a minimalist external control layout that gives you access to critical shooting parameters and nothing more. The camera's external controls fall nicely in hand. Build quality is exceptional, with a magnesium alloy frame and solid brass top and bottom plates adding welcome stability without feeling unnecessarily heavy. The camera's compact size means it can fit in a small shoulder bag, and its light weight - compared to a full frame DSLR - means that you won't need to to visit a chiropractor after a day spent walking with the camera around your neck.
A bright viewfinder allows for quick and accurate focus even in low light. Engraved depth of field markings on the lenses make zone focusing relatively simple. The M9-P embodies nearly all of the traits that make film-era Leica M models such great analog cameras.
Leica Updates CCD Corrosion Upgrade Program
Concessions to the needs and conveniences related to digital camera use, however, are few and far between. The user interface design is where we struggle most with the M9-P.
Every other 4-way controller we've ever seen includes an 'OK' button at its center. Here there is nothing but what looks to be a placeholder for a button that was going to go there at some point.
Instead, you're forced to continually confirm settings with the 'Set' button which is rather inconveniently placed on the opposite side of the camera body. And the awkward process of adjusting ISO, in which you must continue holding the ISO button while using the 4-way controller or dial to navigate the choices, never ceased to be frustrating.
Also on the list of things we'd love to see improved upon in an M9-P successor is a higher resolution rear LCD screen.
The k dot resolution of the M9-P is quite low by current standards and makes critical image evaluation virtually impossible.
The camera is also rather slow in writing to the SD card, which means a delay in reviewing images even in single-shot mode.We purchase every product we review with our own funds — we never accept anything from product manufacturers. When most people think of high-end digital cameras, Canon and Nikon are the brands that spring to mind.
Leica is a leader in with some terrific camera offerings. The company is known for its outstanding lens quality, but this manufacturer has some impressive digital cameras, too.
Some people classify Leica as a luxury camera brand because its cameras have excellent build quality and are made with high-end materials. But when you want a cool-looking, high-quality camera that creates amazing photos, Leica is tough to beat. There are many models, features, and technical considerations to weigh.
Our Leica camera buying guide brings the options into sharp focus so you can choose the one that best suits your needs. The image sensor is extremely important in a digital camera, as it measures the light coming through the lens, essentially creating the digital photo. Leica digital cameras carry a variety of image sensor sizes.
Full-frame sensors are the largest, delivering the best image quality. Resolution is the number of pixels or individual dots recorded in the digital photo. Leica cameras carry between 20 and 47 megapixels. Larger megapixel counts generally result in better-quality photos.
A 3-inch LCD is common on Leica cameras. Some Leica cameras have touchscreen LCDs to simplify operation. Leica cameras often can record videos at a maximum 4K resolution, which is an improvement over HD resolution. When shooting in burst mode, you can capture several photos per second, which is great for action photography. Leica cameras can shoot at speeds between 5 and 20 frames per second in burst mode. Leica camera lenses do not require any special cleaning techniques; you can use a microfiber cloth.
Leica makes a wide range of cameras, including fixed-lens cameras, interchangeable lens rangefinders, and mirrorless ILCs interchangeable lens cameras.
Here are some of the strengths of the primary Leica camera models. And yet, it still delivers excellent low-light images, 4K video resolution, and 10 frames per second in burst mode. Leica has carried the M family of cameras over from the days of film. This is a rangefinder style of camera, which is a bit like a DSLR because it can accept multiple lenses.
However, it has a different focusing mechanism than a DSLRas well as a smaller body size. The M series has a retro design and outstanding image quality. Full-frame image sensors are common in the M series. Leica even offers a monochrome M-series camera that removes the color-array filter, allowing for a contrast boost in the black-and-white image. Leica Q cameras also contain full-frame image sensors, but they cost a bit less than the M series. Q models often include a touchscreen display for ease of control.
It outperforms the majority of mirrorless cameras available on the market from other manufacturers. It also delivers 4K video resolution and excellent low-light results. With most of the impacted cameras already fixed over the past four years, Leica has been winding down the program. And in addition to all this work, Leica is also throwing in a full one-year warranty with the same terms as newly purchased product.Leica M9-P - First Impression Review
For those wanting to hold onto their CCD-based M camera, this is actually a very good deal and a great way to extend the life of your camera.
The other option is to take advantage of the Upgrade Program, which remains active. The pricing depends on what camera you are upgrading from and which you are upgrading towards. Sensor corrosion indicated with red circles.
We would like to inform you about a change in pricing of the replacement program for corroded sensors that affected some M9, M9-P, M Monochrom and M-E camera models.
Until further notice, we will continue to offer free replacement of affected sensors for the camera models stated above that were purchased as new products within the past five years. This offer expresses our commitment to conserving the long-term usability of Leica cameras. Our upgrade program will continue to be offered as an alternative option.
Instead of a sensor replacement, we offer our customers the alternative of sending us their camera affected by sensor corrosion as partial payment toward the purchase of selected Leica M-Camera models of the Typ generation and the M10 at even more attractive terms.
With regard to the above, we would like to remind you that the replacement of CCD sensors and the upgrade offers apply only to cameras confirmed to be affected by this specific problem, and only to the models of the Leica M-System we have listed.
Preventive replacement of sensors is not included in this program. Log In. Remember Me. Lost your password? Home News and Announcements. Leave a Reply Cancel Reply Your email address will not be published. The M9 was Leica's first 'full-frame' digital rangefinder, enabling the use of most Leica 'M' series lenses at the originally intended field-of-view.
It retains the classic M series look and build quality while promising a no-compromise approach consummate with its not-inconsiderable price-tag. While beautifully engineered and undeniably capable as a photographic tool, the M9 understandably lacks some of the digital sophistication offered by more mass-market products and its sensor isn't a match for the latest CMOS designs in low light. Its lack of anti-aliasing filter enables it to capture astonishing levels of detail at lower ISO settings though.

To me, it was a more mature Leica M. But to some others, they missed the M9 punch. You can see them below, and click them for larger views. Love leica but get frustrated by the asking price and now reliability. Hence if the Leica you have works, the chances are the one you get may work or not. Hence I would rather not spend the money on an M10 or an SL or Tl2 for the repair department to have it for 90 days if the M9 currently works and there is a minor difference.
